Variety is reporting that “Racer And The Jailbird” has been selected as Belgium’s Oscar submission in the he foreign-language Oscar race.
Michaël R Roskam’s “Racer and the Jailbird” (“Le Fidèle”), a neo-noir romance drama with Matthias Schoenaerts (“Our Souls at Night”) and Adèle Exarchopoulos (“Blue Is the Warmest Color”) has been selected to represent Belgium in the foreign-language Oscar race.
Roskam’s third feature, “Racer and the Jailbird” is set to world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and will then play at Toronto. Roskam’s feature debut,” Bullhead,” earned a foreign-language Oscar nomination in 2012.
Written by Roskam, Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré, “Racer and the Jailbird” charts the tragic love story between a gangster, Gino, and Benedicte, a wealthy and fearless racing driver, against the backdrop of a brutal crime gang in Brussels. Bidegain and Debré previously collaborated on the script of Jacques Audiard’s Palme d’Or winning “Dheepan,” among other films.
Wild Bunch is selling “Racer and the Jailbird” internationally. Neon, which pre-bought the film, will release it later this year in the U.S.
“Racer and the Jailbird” is produced by Bart Van Langendonck for Savage Film (BE) and Pierre-Ange Le Pogam of Stone Angels (FR), in co-production with Pathé (FR), Wild Bunch (FR), Eyeworks (BE), Frakas Productions (BE), Kaap Holland Film (NL) and Submarine (NL).
The film received support from Belgium’s Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF), Centre du Cinéma et de l’Audiovisuel (CAA), Screen Flanders, screen.brussels and Wallimage, as well as Eurimages, Creative Europe and Netherlands Film Fund.
Matthias has confirmed he will be working with Robert De Niro while promoting “Racer And The Jailbird” in Belgium. As you might have noticed, Matthias shared a photo of himself and De Niro on his official instagram account celebrating De Niro’s birthday with the caption: “Something’s cooking …. and it smells goood. Surprise surprise #robertdeniro #morenewslater”. He also shared a photo the next day of himself alongside Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Sean Penn and writer/director David O. Russell. Matthias confirmed he will be working with De Niro in 2018 to VTR. However, he is unable to confirm which project but gave the hint that he will be filming for 7 months. VTR is speculating, and this seems very plausible, that Matthias has joined the cast of David O. Russell’s Amazon series which also has Julianne Moore attached. Deadline reported last year that the series is still untitled. Here’s an excerpt of their report:
The big drama series package that has David O. Russell as writer-director and Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore starring is landing at Amazon and The Weinstein Company. We hear the untitled series has received a two-season commitment in a $160 million deal. Each season will consist of eight episodes, all written and directed by Russell. Details about the show are sketchy, but we hear it is a mafia crime series.
Last month Variety reported that Michael Shannon has also joined the cast of the series. They are reporting that production is expected to start later this year in New York. Keep in mind that it’s still speculation that Matthias has joined this project, we are hoping Amazon will confirm their casting soon.
The Toronto International Film Festival announced this year’s schedule earlier today. “Racer and the Jailbird” is selected for the festival as part of their Special Presentation program, as we previously reported. Matthias is expected to attend, according to the official press release, alongside his costar Adèle Exarchopoulos and director Michaël R. Roskam. The festival runs from September 7 to 17, 2017 and the first screening will be held on Thursday, September 7th. This screening is a press & industry only screening. The first public screening will be held on September 12. For more information about the tickets and festival be sure to head over to the official website.

The following programmers note was released:
The only threat to the romance between thief Gino (Matthias Schoenaerts) and race car driver Bénédicte is the lure of his next heist, in this latest crime-thriller from Belgian director Michaël R. Roskam (Bullhead, The Drop).
Reuniting with the exceptionally talented Matthias Schoenaerts, Belgian director Michaël R. Roskam returns to the criminal underbelly with Racer and the Jailbird. But in a departure from the small-time crooks of Bullhead and The Drop (TIFF 2014), his latest feature operates in a world of higher stakes and more refined tastes.
The Venice Film Festival Schedule has announced it’s official screening schedule. Matthias is on double festival duty with “Our Souls At Night and “Racer And The Jailbird“. The festival runs from August 30-September 9 and for more information be sure to head over to the official website.

Kent Haruf’s work has always had a special place in my heart for its honesty and specificity. I was honored to adapt his last novel to the screen, and to collaborate with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda to tell this story of ordinary people so intensely specific and local, and that’s what makes it universal. We cast extensively locally, and the story gave us a chance to explore the specificities of Eastern Colorado—the landscape that drives these two characters together, the things they like to hear on the radio, and the timeless notion of pretend families. Working with the actors and the land to tell Haruf’s story of this cycle of love and loss that is life, just made me more certain that stuff of great literature exists nowhere else but in our everyday lives, as it always has.
