Matthias Confirms Robert De Niro Project For 2018

Matthias Confirms Robert De Niro Project For 2018

Matthias has confirmed he will be working with Robert De Niro while promoting “Racer And The Jailbird” in Belgium. As you might have noticed, Matthias shared a photo of himself and De Niro on his official instagram account celebrating De Niro’s birthday with the caption: “Something’s cooking …. and it smells goood. Surprise surprise #robertdeniro #morenewslater”. He also shared a photo the next day of himself alongside Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Sean Penn and writer/director David O. Russell. Matthias confirmed he will be working with De Niro in 2018 to VTR. However, he is unable to confirm which project but gave the hint that he will be filming for 7 months. VTR is speculating, and this seems very plausible, that Matthias has joined the cast of David O. Russell’s Amazon series which also has Julianne Moore attached. Deadline reported last year that the series is still untitled. Here’s an excerpt of their report:

The big drama series package that has David O. Russell as writer-director and Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore starring is landing at Amazon and The Weinstein Company. We hear the untitled series has received a two-season commitment in a $160 million deal. Each season will consist of eight episodes, all written and directed by Russell. Details about the show are sketchy, but we hear it is a mafia crime series.

Last month Variety reported that Michael Shannon has also joined the cast of the series. They are reporting that production is expected to start later this year in New York. Keep in mind that it’s still speculation that Matthias has joined this project, we are hoping Amazon will confirm their casting soon.

Our Souls at Night
September 1 | 22:15 Sala Grande | Out Of Competition
Kent Haruf’s work has always had a special place in my heart for its honesty and specificity. I was honored to adapt his last novel to the screen, and to collaborate with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda to tell this story of ordinary people so intensely specific and local, and that’s what makes it universal. We cast extensively locally, and the story gave us a chance to explore the specificities of Eastern Colorado—the landscape that drives these two characters together, the things they like to hear on the radio, and the timeless notion of pretend families. Working with the actors and the land to tell Haruf’s story of this cycle of love and loss that is life, just made me more certain that stuff of great literature exists nowhere else but in our everyday lives, as it always has.

“Our Souls At Night” Selected For Venice Film Festival

Deadline is reporting that “Our Souls At Night” will have it’s world premiere during the Venice Film Festival. Matthias’ co-stars Jane Fonda and Robert Redford will receive Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement awards.

Jane Fonda and Robert Redford have each been awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement by the Venice International Film Festival and the duo’s upcoming pic Our Souls At Night, a Netflix original film, will world premiere at the 74th edition of the fest in an out-of-competition slot.

Our Souls At Night, which is directed by Ritesh Batra and produced by Redford’s Wildwood Enterprises, will screen on September 1 in the Palazzo del Cinema and a ceremony to award the film’s stars Fonda and Redford will take place just before the screening.

The film marks the first time Fonda and Redford have appeared on screen together since they both starred in 1979’s The Electric Horseman. Based on the novel by Kent Haruf and adapted for screen by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, Our Souls At Night is set in Colorado and begins when Addie Moore (Fonda) pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor Louis Waters (Redford). Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town, they’d been neighbors for decades but had little contact. Netflix is launching the film globally next year.

Matthias Joins “Mustang”

THR is reporting that Matthias is set to star in Clermont-Tonnerre’s “Mustang” alongside Jason Mitchell. The movie got picked up by Focus.

In one of the first major acquisitions on the ground in Cannes, Focus Features has nabbed worldwide rights, excluding France, to Mustang, a drama that will star Matthias Schoenaerts and Jason Mitchell and mark the feature directing debut of French helmer Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre.

Written by de Clermont-Tonnerre, Mona Fastvold and Brock Norman Brock, the film centers on a convict named Roman (Schoenaerts) who is given the chance to participate in a rehabilitation therapy program training wild mustangs. With little connection to his fellow inmates, Roman struggles to communicate with the animals. Working alongside young convict Henry (Mitchell), Roman forges a strong bond with a particularly difficult mustang, which forces him to confront his harsh past and innermost demons.

Actress-turned-director de Clermont-Tonnerre, whose credits in front of the camera include The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, developed Mustang through the Sundance Labs and received the Sundance Institute/NHK Award for the project in 2015. Production on the English-language film will begin in September.

“Laure’s project is in the classic tradition of movies illuminating the connection between human nature and animal instinct,” said Focus chairman Peter Kujawski. “Her vision for this project resonated powerfully to us, and the lead role is perfect for Matthias and his formidable talents.”

In France, the film will be distributed by France 3, Canal + and Ad Vitam. Alain Goldman (La Vie en Rose) is producing through his company Legende, with Molly Hallam executive producing.

“Kursk” Production Begins

Coming Soon is reporting that the production has begun for “Kursk“.

Filming is officially underway today on the upcoming thriller Kursk. The Kursk movie production is taking place in locations throughout Europe, including Belgium, Norway and France. Written by Academy Awards nominated screenwriter Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan, The Patriot, Thor: The Dark World), directed by Oscar nominated director Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt), and produced by Luc Besson and Ariel Zeitoun, the Kursk movie is based on the book A Time to Die: The Untold Story of the Kursk Tragedy by acclaimed journalist Robert Moore.

The Kursk movie is inspired by the unforgettable true story of the K-141 KURSK, a Russian flagship nuclear-powered submarine that sank to the bottom of the Barents Sea in August 2000. As 23 sailors fought for survival aboard the disabled sub, their families desperately battled bureaucratic obstacles and impossible odds to find answers and save them.

The film stars an internationally acclaimed cast headlined by Matthias Schoenaerts (Far From The Madding Crowd, The Danish Girl), Colin Firth (The King‘s Speech, Kingsman: the Secret Service), Léa Seydoux (Inglourious Basterds, Blue Is The Warmest Color), Peter Simonischek (Toni Erdmann), Max Von Sydow (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Shutter Island), and Michael Nyqvist (Millennium Trilogy), among others.

The Kursk movie crew includes Catherine Marchand (The Danish Girl) as costume designer and Alexandre Desplat as composer. Anthony Dod Mantle (Academy Award winner for Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) is director of photography, Thierry Flamand (Chocolat) serves as Production designer and Valdis Oskardottir (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Finding Forrester) is the film’s editor.

Advising and consulting the filmmakers are subject matter experts including journalist Robert Moore, author of the novel upon which the film is based, along with David Russell, (Commodore, British Royal Navy), and noted submarine expert Ramsey Martin.

The film is being produced by Via Est, Belga Productions in association with EuropaCorp, which is also handling international sales for the film. STXfilms will distribute in the United States for EuropaCorp Films USA.

Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Fox has announced the release date for “Red Sparrow“. The Russian spy film starring Jennifer Lawrence moved from a November 2016 release to March 2, 2018 for the United States, where it’s the only title standing.

20th Century Fox used the exhibition industry trade show to debut a sexy first look at the upcoming Cold War thriller. The film follows Lawrence as a prima ballerina who breaks her leg. With her dancing career in jeopardy, Lawrence is recruited for a secretive Russian spy agency. There she falls in love with Joel Edgerton (glimpsed in a skimpy speedo).

“The two begin this cat and mouse seduction and fall in love, but you’re never really sure if the relationship is real and whose side you’re on,” said Emma Watts, Fox film vice chairman.
