Lea Seydoux Joins “Kursk”

Screen Daily is reporting that Lea Seydoux has joined Matthias and Colin Firth in “Kursk“. Filming is expected to start in April.

Lea Seydoux (Spectre) has joined Matthias Schoenaerts and Colin Firth in the cast of Thomas Vinterberg’s English-language Russian submarine drama Kursk for France’s EuropaCorp.

Set to start shooting in April, the film is based on the real-life events of 2000 when an explosion on board caused the Kursk submarine to sink in the Barents Sea, prompting a desperate struggle to save those on board.

Written by Robert Rodal, who was nominated for an Oscar for Saving Private Ryan, Kursk is based on the novel A Time To Die by Robert Moore.

The project is being produced by Luxembourg’s VIA EST with Belgium’s Belga Productions with EuropaCorp.

EuropaCorp has international rights to the film which it is starting to talk to buyers about at this week’s European Film Market.

Deadline confirms the news and also has details on Matthias’ role, which you can find after the jump.

Neon Buys “Racer and the Jailbird”

Variety is reporting that Neon has bought the North American rights to “Race And The Jailbird“, which was previously titled “The Faitful“.

Neon has pre-bought North American rights to Michaël R. Roskam’s “Racer and the Jailbird” out of the Berlin Film Festival, Variety has learned.

The romantic thriller pairs director Roskam with actor Matthias Schoenaerts — the two have previously collaborated on the likes of “The Drop” and “Bullhead,” a foreign language Oscar nominee. It co-stars Adèle Exarchopoulos, who turned heads in “Blue Is the Warmest Color.”

“Racer and the Jailbird” follows a gangster (Schoenaerts) who meets and falls for a race car driver (Exarchopoulos). Their romance tests loyalties. The film is in French and set in Belgium. Neon is planning a theatrical release, but a premiere date has yet to be picked.

Neon is a new distribution company founded by Alamo Drafthouse’s Tim League and Tom Quinn, the former head of Radius-TWC. It was very active at this year’s Sundance, buying the comedy “Ingrid Goes West,” the drama “Roxanne Roxanne,” and the drama “Beach Rats.” All three won awards at the festival.

Roskam wrote the screenplay to the film with Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré. It will be produced by Pierre-Ange Le Pogam and Bart Van Langendonck, with cinematography by Nicolas Karakatsanis, and editing by Alain Dessauvage. Stone Angels and Savage Film produced with Pathé and Wild Bunch co-producing. Wild Bunch is handling international sales and Pathé is distributing in France.

Wild Bunch negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.

Matthias Joins “Red Sparrow”

THR is reporting that Matthias has joined “Red Sparrow” alongside Jeremy Irons, Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Lawrence.

Matthias Schoenaerts and Jeremy Irons have signed on to join Jennifer Lawrence in the Red Sparrow.

The story, an adaptation of the Jason Matthews espionage novel, follows a Russian intelligence officer (Lawrence) who is ordered against her will to become a “Sparrow,” a trained seductress, and to operate against a young CIA agent who handles the agency’s most important Russian mole. Joel Edgerton also is attached to star.

The Hunger Games helmer Francis Lawrence is reuniting with Jennifer Lawrence for the Chernin Entertainment and Fox film. Justin Haythe wrote the script.

Schoenaerts’ recent films include Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl and Luca Guadagnino’s A Bigger Splash, and he will soon star in Netflix’s Our Souls at Night with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. He’s repped by CAA and UBBA in Paris.

Irons will soon be seen in video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed and Disney’s Their Finest. He also will reprise his role as Alfred in Warner Bros.’ Justice League. He’s repped by CAA.

Matthias Joins Terrence Malick’s “Radegund”?

We missed this possible project before, but looks like Matthias might have joined Terrence Malick’s upcoming movie “Radegund“. Indiewire is reporting the following story:

While the biggest news surrounding Terrence Malick at the moment is that the reclusive director will be making a rare public appearance next month at the Princeton Garden Theater for a live conversation following a screening of Roberto Rossellini‘s “Journey To Italy” (tough nuts, it’s already sold out), the filmmaker is already at work on his next feature, “Radegund.” Even though his love triangle music drama “Weightless” is yet to come, cameras are rolling on WWII movie, and all we know officially so far is that “Inglourious Basterds” actor August Diehl is leading the movie, with newcomer Valerie Pachner also in the film. Well, you can add another name (and possibly more).

According to German site Blick, the always great Bruno Ganz (“Wings Of Desire“) is part cast for this tale about Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian man who opposed the Nazis, and refused to fight as a conscientious objector. He was executed by the Nazis in 1943. However, if this cast list from German industry site Crew United is accurate, the full ensemble has been revealed, and among the many names, are Matthias Schoenaerts and Jürgen Prochnow. IMDB also lists Michael Nyqvist in a role that doesn’t appear on the Crew United page, but again, none of this is official. And as we already know, Malick calls in lots of people for his movies, but they don’t always make the final cut.

Matthias Joins “Our Souls at Night”

Netflix has announced the cast of “Our Souls at Night” and Matthias has joined the cast. Entertainment Weekly is reporting the following story:

Netflix has announced that principal photography will kick off on Monday on Our Souls at Night, the adaptation of Kent Haruf’s novel. Jane Fonda and Robert Redford will star as Addie Moore and Louis Waters, a widow and widower who’ve lived next to each other for years. The pair have almost no relationship, but that all changes when Addie tries to make a connection with her neighbor.

Ritesh Batra (The Lunchbox) is directing from a script by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, and Our Souls at Night also stars Bruce Dern, Judy Greer, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Iain Armitage.

“I’m looking forward to teaming up with Jane and working with the talented Ritesh Batra,” Redford said in a statement. “Our Souls at Night is an endearing story and I’m happy we get to share it with a broader audience.”

Production will start Monday in Colorado, where the novel is set, and Our Souls at Night will premiere on Netflix in 2017.

“Kurk” Filming Postponed

THR is reporting that the filming for “Kurk” has been postponed. No new start date has been announced.

The Russian shoot of Colin Firth submarine disaster movie Kursk, produced by Luc Besson, has been postponed as the country’s defense ministry is still reviewing the permit request.

The shoot was scheduled to start in Russia next month and run for about a month. A new start date hasn’t been set.

“We haven’t yet received a permit from the defense ministry,” Andrei Sigle, a producer on the Russian side, told local radio station Radio Baltika. “They probably have other things to take care of.”

According to Sigle, taking the shoot to another country, such as Norway, which observers immediately suggested, is currently out of the question. He said the producers still hope to get the green light from Russia’s military.

The movie is based on a 2000 incident involving a K-141 Kursk submarine. A torpedo exploded inside the Russian submarine during a naval exercise in the Barents Sea, and the submarine’s entire crew of 118 died.

Produced by Besson’s EuropaCorp, the movie is to be directed by Thomas Vinterburg and will also star Matthias Schoenaerts.

Incidentally, Russia’s defense ministry originally promised cooperation with the crew. But later it reportedly grew concerned about granting access to classified information and locations. It didn’t comment on the delay of the shoot.

EuropaCorp Greenlights “Kursk”

Deadline confirms Matthias is set to star in “Kursk“. Matthias mentioned this project last month to the Belgium press, but it seems it got the greenlight by EuropaCorp.

EuropaCorp has set Matthias Schoenaerts to star in Kursk, the fact-based survival drama that Thomas Vinterberg will direct this fall from Saving Private Ryan scribe Robert Rodat’s adaptation of the Robert Moore book A Time To Die. The film centers on a true story of the Kursk, a nuclear-powered Russian submarine that sank during a training exercise in the Barents Sea in 2000. Twenty-three sailors survive the crash and desperately wait for help to arrive while their oxygen runs out minute-by-minute.

It seems like yesterday that Schoenaerts broke out here as the brawny tragic protagonist of Bullhead, and he has risen quickly. Schoenaerts and Vinterberg just worked together in Far From The Madding Crowd, and Schoenaerts most recently starred with Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl. CAA and UBBA rep the actor.

This becomes another greenlighted movie for EuropaCorp to be distributed through its new pipeline RED. EuropaCorp founder Luc Besson has the company’s biggest picture in production right now in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, a sci-fi epic that stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne and an eclectic supporting cast that includes Rihanna, John Goodman, Ethan Hawke, Clive Owen, Rutger Hauer and Herbie Hancock.

Matthias To Reteam With Vinterberg For “Kursk”

Matthias talked to the Belgium newspaper The Morning (De Morgen) and he confirmed he will reteam with Bullhead director Michael R. Roskam on “The Faithful” this year but he also mentioned he will reteam with “Far From The Madding Crowd” director Thomas Vinterberg:

I will also collaborate again with Thomas Vinterberg, with whom I worked on Far From The Madding Crowd. Vinterberg will film “Kursk” in the fall, the story of a sunken Russian submarine, and I will play the captain. I am really looking forward to it.

Earlier this year Deadline reported that director Thomas Vinterberg signed on to direct “Kursk“. They reported the following story:

EuropaCorp has set Thomas Vinterberg to helm Kursk, the Robert Rodat-scripted adaptation of the Robert Moore book A Time To Die. Casting will begin shortly for a projected fall production start in Europe. The film is based on the true story of the nuclear-powered Russian submarine, the Kursk, which sank during a training exercise in the Barents Sea in 2000. Twenty-three sailors survived the crash and desperately waited for help to arrive, as their oxygen ran out minute-by-minute.

Variety is reporting the screenplay is written by Robert Rodat and based on Robert Moore’s book ‘A Time to Die’.

Matthias To Star In “The Sound Of Metal”?

Matthias To Star In “The Sound Of Metal”?

Deadline is reporting that Matthias is in talks to join his “A Bigger Splash” co-star Dakota Johnson in the upcoming movie “The Sound Of Metal“.

Deals are making for Fifty Shades Of Grey‘s Dakota Johnson to star with The Danish Girl‘s Matthias Schoenaerts in The Sound Of Metal, a drama that will mark the directorial debut of Darius Marder, who is best known for his collaborations with filmmaker Derek Cianfrance including co-writing The Place Beyond The Pines. Michael Costigan and Ben Leclair are producing.

Johnson will play a singer in a band, and Schoenaerts plays the drummer. Everything changes when he begins to lose his hearing and has to come to grips with a future that will be filled with silence.

The film is in the process of being set for financing, but the plan is to shoot in August.
