Matthias Schoenaerts was born on December 8, 1977 in Antwerpen, Belgium. His father, Julien Schoenaerts is an actor and his mother is Dominique Wiche. Matthias made his acting debut when he was 15 years old alongside his father in “Daens” (1992). The movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He attended film school in Belgium but was expelled for poor attendance in his second year. When he was 21 he enrolled at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Antwerp and graduated in 2003. He already made guest appearances in television series and short films while still attending the Academy of Dramatic Arts.

In the following years Matthias got cast in several short films and played a supporting role in Paul Verhouven’s “Black book” (2006) and also landed his first starring role in “Dennis van Rita” (2006). His break-out role in his home country Belgium was “Loft” (2008). The movie was a box office hit in Belgium and became the top-grossing Flemish film of all time. Matthias is expected to reprise his role of Filip in the American remake of the movie “The Loft” (2014) which will be released in 2014.

Matthias committed to “Bullhead” (2011) in 2005 but it took first-time director Roskam several years to secure financing. The movie earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012 and Matthias received critical acclaim for hi portrayal of Jacky Vanmarsenille. Matthias starred opposite Marion Cotillard in Jacques Audiard’s De rouille et d’os/Rust and Bone (2012). The movie premiered during the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and was very well received. He won a César Award for Most Promising Actor.

Matthias starred in Guillaume Canet directorial debut in Hollywood: Blood Ties (2013) and he has an impressive upcoming slate in 2014 and 2015. He will co-star opposite Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace in “The Drop” (2014). Star alongside Kate Winslet in “A Little Chaos” (2014) and alongside Michelle Williams in “Suite Française” (2014). He will also star opposide Carey Mulligan, Michael Sheen, and Tom Sturridge in “Far from the Madding Crowd” (2015). “A Bigger Splash” (TBA) is currently in production and Matthias will co-star alongside Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes and currently also attached to star in Janus Metz Pedersen’s “Galveston” and is rumored to be attached to the still untitled Florent-Emilio Siri mini-series.
