A landscape gardener with instinct and flair, Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet) is the breath of fresh air that the stuffy geometry of Versailles needs. Brought in by strict garden chief André Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts), a man who prizes order above all, she is soon charming all she meets and innovating with fresh approaches to shrubbery. But there is intrigue at the Court of King Louis XIV, a vipers nest of gossip and skullduggery, where Helen McCrory gives a delicious turn as a woman with a grudge. For his sophomore feature Alan Rickman has fashioned a spritely period romp, demonstrating a confident feel for the material – an original script from first-time screenwriter Alison Deegan. There is much pleasure taken in the wit and flow of royal society; Rickman himself plays King Louis XIV with a dry bemusement that will delight fans, while Stanley Tucci is in fine flamboyant form. But the film’s greatest strength lies in its emphasis on women and their relationships, with a sublime performance from Winslet that invests immense emotional grit into Sabine, a woman struggling with her own personal demons. As André becomes aware of her charms, so too will audiences, making A Little Chaos a treat for green-fingered romantics. Let them greet Kate!

A Brooklyn bartender finds himself caught between the cops and a crew of Chechen mobsters, in this gritty crime drama starring Tom Hardy, Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust & Bone), Noomi Rapace and the late, great James Gandolfini.
Screen Daily is reporting that “Belgica” producer announced that Matthias dropped out of the movie.
Matthias Schoenaerts has left upcoming feature Belgica, according to production company Menuet.
The Belgian star of Bullhead and Rust and Bone was set to play the main role in the latest film from Felix van Groeningen, director of Oscar-nominated The Broken Circle Breakdown.
Schoenaerts has chosen to devote his attention to an upcoming US project at this time, said a statement from Ghent-based Menuet.
A replacement will be announced ahead of the shoot, which will begin on December 1 in Ghent.
Schoenaerts will be next seen alongside Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and the late James Gandolfini in The Drop, from Bullhead director Michaël R. Roskam.
He will also star in Alan Rickman’s A Little Chaos, which will close the Toronto film festival in September; romantic war drama Suite Francaise; and novel adaptation Far from the Madding Crowd, directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Juno Temple, Michael Sheen and Carey Mulligan.
Belgica follows two brothers who start a bar and get swept up in its success in the midst of Belgium’s nightlife scene.
Van Groeningen wrote the script with With Friends Like These co-writer Arne Sierens, and the film will be produced by Menuet in co-production with Topkapi and Pyramide Productions.
Van Groeningen is represented by CAA and Management 360. Schoenaerts is represented by CAA.
It has been speculated by several news outlets that the US project mentioned is “Galveston”.
Matthias covers OUT’s September 2014 issue. We have added the magazine scans and photoshoot in our gallery. Be sure to pick up your own copy while it’s on newsstands! The full interview can be found in our press archive and excerpts can be found below.
On potentially becoming typecast: “I don’t want to be pinned down as just a physical actor. I understand that people may think I am, since Bullhead and Rust and Bone popped up one year after another, but that’s a coincidence. I’ve done a lot of different stuff.”
On the vulnerability of acting: “When I get on set, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” he says. “And it makes you very vulnerable, as an artist, to do that. In our job, we’re always the subjects of judgment, and if you want to do the real work, I think you have to be vulnerable as hell. You have to be prepared to suck.”
On truthfulness leading to sexiness in acting: “What I think is sexy is truthfulness, and that’s something that overwhelms time. That’s why Marlon Brando is still sexy nowadays — not because he was a gorgeous guy, but because his work was truthful. The rest is form. That may make me want to have sex with someone, but it’s temporary, and in the end it’s bullshit.”
